Theron signs on for Monster 2: Dinah Shore Weekend Bloodbath

Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer has plans for a big-budget sequel to Monster , the 2003 independent film about lesbian serial killer, Aileen Wuornos. Horror film veteran Wes Craven has signed to direct and actress Charlize Theron will again star— for a reported 15 million up front, ten percent of gross, and firm assurances that this time she won't be required to gain any weight or look ugly.

Says, Bruckheimer “I respected the original [film], but it was essentially an art house flick, you know? Patty Jenkins [the first movie's writer/director] got bogged down on following the historical record of Wuornos' life. And poor Charlize was pretty much wasted in that film. She's usually such a stunner. It's like they went out of their way to make her look drab or something.”

“Wes [Craven] and I plan to take the franchise in a more commercial direction.   You know, a slasher film the whole family can enjoy! I mean, damn, a lesbian serial killer? You can't get more high-concept than that. Monster 2 will have lots of scares, loads of gore, plus-- with Charlize now portraying a younger, sexy Aileen Wuornos-- generous helpings of hot girl-on-girl action! Monster 2 is going to lay the foundation for a durable horror movie franchise. Look out Freddy & Jason, there's a new girl in town!”

The Monster 2 script is still in development but according to Bruckheimer the plot (actually a prequel) has Wuornos vacationing at the Dinah Shore golf tournament in Palm Springs, California with lesbian girlfriend, Selby. Bloody mayhem and hijinks ensue when Wuornos discovers Selby has cheated on her with a lesbian circuit party go go dancer.

Actress Cristina Ricci played Selby in the original film but was not asked back for Monster 2 .  Explains Bruckheimer.  "Fine actress, but I didn't feel the chemistry with Charlize. Also, I can't get past that forehead thing."

Actor Stuart Townsend will take over the role as Selby.  Townsend is Charlize Theron's real-life boyfriend. His cross-gender casting has raised some eyebrows in Hollywood , but Bruckheimer expressed confidence that the Scottish actor had the chops to realistically portray a woman.

“Besides, Charlize insisted. It was sort of a package deal.”
